While a little bit of stress keeps you focused and motivated, too much stress can sap your energy, make your mind wander and lose sight of the important things in life. There are many different ways to relieve stress, from playing sports and exercising to meditation and artistic expression. Eating certain foods can also help you overcome stress. Here are a few types of food to keep you relaxed and ready to take on the day:
Almonds – Crunchy and full of flavor, almonds deliver a lot of vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin E, zinc and magnesium. Both B vitamins and magnesium are crucial to the production of serotonin in the body. Serotonin helps regulate your mood and relieves stress. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals in the blood stream and reduces high blood pressure.
Fish – Many varieties of fish carry B6 and B12 vitamins. Just like B2 vitamins found in almonds, B12 plays a major role in the synthesis of serotonin. Unlike B2, however, a B12 deficiency can lead to depression. Grill some tuna, mackerel and salmon. They are all great sources of B12 and an excellent way to beat stress.
Milk – Milk is a great source of vitamin D and bone-strengthening calcium, which helps to relieve tense muscles. Drink a cup before you go to bed to help reach a deeper sleep.
Asparagus – Low levels of folic acid may lead to stress, anxiety and depression. One vegetable that contains large amounts of folic acid is asparagus. From one cup, you can get as much as two-thirds of your daily recommended amount. Try sautéing some slices of asparagus and add them to an omelet for a healthy breakfast. You can also steam or grill the spears as a side for a variety of meat, poultry or fish dishes.
Whole-grain bread, rice or pasta –Â When low carb diets were the latest trend in healthy eating, people missed out on some very important nutrients. Carbs raise serotonin levels and create a calming, soothing effect on your body. Although any type of carbohydrate will give you this euphoric feeling, consider eating whole-grain pasta, bread or rice. Simple carbs in white bread and sweetened desserts burn quickly, leaving you feeling sluggish afterwards. Whole grain carbs are like large logs in a fire, burning slowly to fuel you throughout the day.
