Fast Food Companies Still Lagging In Transition To Healthier Menus
If you needed yet another reason to pursue your online culinary certificate, a recent study from Yale University should be enough to give you that final nudge.
Even though there may not be many people left who believe fast food is healthy, or even “not that bad for you,” the Yale findings should put the final nail in the coffin. And it could be just the thing that motivates people to not only find healthier alternatives, but also continue to develop as home cooks – whether that be on their own or through an online culinary arts program – in order to provide more nutritious meals for their families.
Yale study findings
The report from the Yale Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity, titled Fast Food Facts 2013, found that while fast food companies have reduced their advertising targeted at children and have added healthier menu options, they still aren’t doing nearly enough to fight the child obesity epidemic in America.
One of the most telling pieces of information contained in the report was that only 3 percent of all kids’ meal combos studied met the fast food industry’s own Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative and the Kids LiveWell nutrition standards. In exact terms, only 33 of the 5,427 kids’ meals examined were considered healthy.
Alarming fast food consumption
The Yale report also noted that, according to a 2012 study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine by researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago, about 33 percent of all children and 41 percent of all teens eat fast food every day.
Between the nutritional findings and the high consumption statistics, it is no wonder that there is an obesity problem in the U.S. And that just provides further reason for parents to try their hand at something like an online cooking school so they can offer their children healthier options at home.
