5 Ways To Change Up Your Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Too often grilled cheese sandwiches are simply a few slices of cheese melted between two slices of bread. While you’ll probably be able to come up with all kinds of ways to customize your own cheesy creation when you take online chef courses, here are a few suggestions that can get you thinking creatively about your next grilled cheese sandwich.
One of the easiest ways to make your grilled cheese better is to just make it bigger. More cheese and crispy bread means there is just extra of what you already like. When you add additional bread, make sure you’re adding another slice of cheese between each piece of bread as well, or your cheese-to-bread ratio will be off and it’ll feel like you’re simply eating a crispy loaf of wheat, rather than a tasty sandwich.
Mac and cheese
Cook some macaroni and cheese beforehand. Make sure the cheese in the pasta is thick so that it doesn’t all fall out of the sandwich as you eat it. It can be a good idea to put slices of cheese underneath and over the top of the macaroni and cheese to help keep everything together.
Put some peanut butter and bacon in it
Sharp cheddar cheese, bacon and a small dollop of peanut butter can make for one tasty sandwich. The peanut butter will melt as it heats up, so it’s a good idea to either use it sparingly or keep plenty of napkins handy.
Some green to your cheese
Spinach, arugula or some mixed salad greens make great additions to grilled cheeses, especially if you’re using several different kinds of cheese. Finely chopped broccoli can also be an excellent choice, especially if you’re going to add macaroni and cheese to your sandwich. Avocado is another ingredient that can bring some color to your grilled cheese. Avocado, tomatoes and goat cheese can make make for a winning combination.
A fried egg
You’ve probably seen restaurants everywhere topping burgers with a fried egg, but that technique can also be applied to grilled cheese sandwiches. While it can be a bit messy, an egg cooked over easy can be a tasty addition to any grilled cheese sandwich.
