Now, scientists are reevaluating the data and have come to some surprising conclusions. People who drank two to three cups of coffee a day decreased their chances of getting Type 2 diabetes by as much as 12 percent.
Decaffeinated coffee also lessened the risk of diabetes, though not as much as regular coffee. The study also observed the presence of obesity in its subjects. According to the study, regular daily consumption of coffee reduced an individual’s risk of primary sclerosing cholangitis, a disease that is often a precursor to cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer.
Researchers attribute coffee’s diabetes-fighting properties to the large amount of polyphenols found within. Certain types of this plant-based molecule have been known to delay the absorption of glucose.
