The second Sunday in May is a time to show your mother that you appreciate everything she has done for you. D’Arabian’s version features layers of sausage and bread and with spinach, mushroom, tomatoes, salsa, cream cheese and Gruyere. The recipe calls for combining the ingredients in muffin cups and chilling overnight, so you’ll need to plan ahead. Allow about 30 minutes for baking on the holiday morning.

2. Bring the family together for dinner
In addition to pampering your mother, this holiday is also about gathering the family around the table. The Food Network’s Giada De Laurentiis offered several menu ideas, including an entree of stuffed pork chops. The filling consists of spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, cream and goat cheese, with salt, pepper and thyme seasoning. A sauce made with chicken broth, lemon juice and zest, and Dijon mustard adds even more flavor.

If you have a food processor and a hand-cranked pasta machine on hand, Food & Wine advised using Domenica Marchetti’s recipe for ravioli. You can even provide your mother with a choice of a few different fillings, like ground pork or turkey, four-cheese or carrot and ricotta. In addition, you’ll need both all-purpose and semolina flour, sea salt, nutmeg, eggs and extra-virgin olive oil.

3. Surprise her with an elegant dessert
The Mother’s Day evening is not complete until you’ve presented the woman of the hour with something sweet. Feel Good Foodie suggested a simple take on chocolate souffle for the occasion. The directions call for combining butter, sugar, vanilla extract, egg whites and melted baking chocolate with strawberry jam in ramekins. The souffles will rise after 18 to 20 minutes in an oven set to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you want to get away from the chocolates, Martha Stewart recommended a no-bake, eggless custard. This recipe relies on the texture of whipped cream and the flavors of strawberries and lemon juice.
