Even if you live in a region that is knee-deep in snow, you may want to forget about the cold weather and enjoy a scoop of ice cream or two. Salt & Straw is a creamery in Portland, Ore., that is dishing out a range of flavors. While ice cream makers have your typical chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and salted caramel options they are also wowing customers with their more creative recipes.

According to FoodBeast, they've made of out-of-the-box flavor mashups like goat cheese marionberry, melon and prosciutto, and pear and bleu cheese. If you think those flavors are inventive you might want to check out some of their meat-themed pints. Recently, they featured a black raspberries and pork belly flavor. Additionally, you can try their bone marrow with bourbon smoked cherries ice cream.

This is the perfect challenge for someone who is taking baking courses online to try. Check out the ice cream shop (or one like it) and see if you can taste all the out-of-the-box ingredients. Then put on your thinking cap to see if you can make your own. All you need is an ice cream base, which is usually flavored with vanilla bean or extract, and you can go from there.
