Exploring The Muscular Dystrophy Diet

There is a focus on healthy dining in the foodie community, but students taking online culinary courses can also prepare food that helps people deal with serious illnesses. One such affliction is muscular dystrophy. It is a genetic disease that leads to progressive weakness and degeneration of muscles that are under voluntary control. One of the most common forms of the disease is called duchenne, which affects how protein is produced in the body. Here are some foods that you can serve people with muscular dystrophy to help combat the effects of the disease.

Lean protein – Consuming low-fat meat is one of the most effective and nutritious methods of bringing protein into your system. You can prepare hamburgers made from ground sirloin, the leanest type of ground beef, and garnish it with lettuce, tomatoes and other healthy vegetables. Another protein-packed food is the egg. One large, hard boiled egg contains 7 grams of protein. You can also use egg whites for an omelette and add vegetables like broccoli or spinach and create a healthy protein-packed breakfast.

Green Tea – This potent tea has polyphenols, which are known for their powerful antioxidant properties. Along with providing protection from the sun and different types of cancer, polyphenols also play a role in reducing oxidative stress, which leads to inflammation and degradation of muscles. The daily recommended dose of green tea for people who suffer from muscular dystrophy is 250 to 500 mg.

Vitamin D – Food that is high in vitamin D helps combat the degradation of muscle fibers and strengthens your bones. Various types of fish are high in vitamin D including raw Atlantic herring, pickled herring, canned salmon, raw mackerel, oil-packed sardines and tuna. Other than fish, fortified cereals are packed with essential vitamins and nutrients. When looking for cereal, make sure you don’t choose  brands that have refined sugar or hydrogenated oils. These ingredients do not strengthen muscles or bones.
