Almost anyone with an interest in the culinary arts is probably already aware that having access to a strong, diverse and reliable set of knives is key to any good kitchen. Still, even with this knowledge being somewhat commonplace, you might be surprised by how many people misuse their cutlery on a regular basis. Of course, the mistakes people make with their cutlery tend to be more subtle than one would imagine, but can end up permanently damaging their knives just the same. Whether you’re pursuing culinary school online or simply want to get the most out of your kitchen, try using these tips for keeping your knives in peak condition:

Avoid damage from food or misuse
It’s deeply important that knife owners understand the risks and damage that can come from misuse in this practice. For example, be sure that you thoroughly wash and dry your knives after each use. Even though many blades are made of stainless steel, prolonged exposure to moisture or particulate matter from food can dull and eventually rust the knife. Understand that sharp is safe
Which do you think is safer? Cutting something with an extremely sharp knife, or with a relatively dull one that hasn’t been sharpened in a while? You may be surprised to find that a sharper knife is safer than a dull one. According to the Pocono Record, cutting through larger or more cumbersome items with a dull knife is a recipe for disaster, as the knife can track off course and end up cutting you instead of the food. You get what you pay for
The phrase itself may be older than time, but it remains true. You don’t need to be an expert chef to benefit from a solid set of knives. When you purchase a knife set for your kitchen, think carefully about what you choose. You don’t, by any means, need to pick out the most expensive ones in the store, but don’t cheap out when making this purchase either. If the price on the set seems too good to be true, then it very well may not be what you’re looking for.
