Add Coffee To The List Of Healthy Foods For Diabetics

Students staying up late to finish a project for an online culinary course know how important it is to have a ready pot of coffee close at hand.  What you might have missed is the fact that it can also lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

In the 1970s, researchers labeled the beverage as unhealthy because of its strong association with cigarette smoking. Coffee was the drink your parents told you would stunt your growth, and doctors would say that it caused heart disease and cancer. Now, scientists are reevaluating the data and have come to some surprising conclusions. People who drank two to three cups of coffee a day decreased their chances of getting Type 2 diabetes by as much as 12 percent.

Decaffeinated coffee also lessened the risk of diabetes, though not as much as regular coffee. The study also observed the presence of obesity in its subjects. Extra weight is one of the most significant of risk factors for diabetes, and in overweight individuals, drinking coffee did little to protect them from diabetes.

Studies identify new health benefits
Discoveries of the health benefits of coffee have popped up in recent years. According to a study from the National Institutes of Health and the AARP, people who drank four or more cups of joe per day were as much as 10 percent less inclined to experience depression than those who didn’t. According to the Mayo Clinic website, coffee helps regulate liver function. According to the study, regular daily consumption of coffee reduced an individual’s risk of primary sclerosing cholangitis, a disease that is often a precursor to cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer.

Researchers attribute coffee’s diabetes-fighting properties to the large amount of polyphenols found within. Certain types of this plant-based molecule have been known to delay the absorption of glucose.
